Martineau was an influential, controversial liberal English Unitarian, and the brother of Harriet Martineau. He was criticized by the conservatives as a pantheist and a materialist. Grace Greenwood (Sara Jane Lippincott said he had a "classical and chiselled look....finely and clearly cut." ("Haps and Mishaps of a Tour in Europe", 1854).
