Original green cloth, gilt, decorated in blind, 404 pp., two leaves of ads inserted at the back. This copy with a presentation inscription from Swift's wife Mary to the Century Club of California. Swift was a lawyer and politician in California. He was appointed Ambassador to Japan in 1889 and died there the following year. In this novel, Swift excoriates several the movers and shakers of the Comstock era, especially the Washoe lawyers and judges, for their facilitation of speculation and fraud. Spine top chipped, spine sunned, remains of sticker removals from the front cover and rear endpapers, one gathering loosening and protruding. A Good copy.
