Contemporary green half morocco, lettered and decorated in gilt, and yellow-green printed cloth - a floral pattern. From the famous English acting family, Fanny Kemble established her fame while very young. Her marriage to Pierce Butler, an American who had inherited several southern plantations and hundreds of slaves, produced two daughters but was unhappy - they separated in the 1840's. She was famous for her beauty - Thomas Sully painted her portrait - her writings, and her one-woman readings of Shakespeare, which produced an excellent income. She was the grandmother of novelist Owen Wister. A little rubbing to some edges, a lovely, Very Good copy.
