Original brown cloth, gilt, elaborately decorated in gilt and black, 403 pp. Higginson is promoting equality for women, who are just as smart and capable as men, despite the opinions of most men, including Huxley and Darwin. Dedicated (in print) to "My Little Daughter Margaret". Higginson is credited as "discoverer" of Emily Dickinson's poetry. She wrote to him, a stranger, in 1862: "Will you be my preceptor, Mr. Higginson?" ("Letters...", v.1, p.304). Slight rubbing, a clean, Very Good copy.
