Original purple cloth, gilt, decorated in blind, illustrated, 216 pp., 9 leaves of publisher's ads bound in back, one leaf of ads before the frontis. This was reprinted many times. Gould was a Boston physician and conchologist. Agassiz had delegated his share of the writing to his assistant, Edouard Desor (Irmscher, 2013, pp.89, 101). This was Part 1 of a proposed series, but no other volumes were published. Old private library (Bela Chapin) markings, including an inked number on the spine; book label of Sydney Ross (1915-2013), Professor of Colloid Science at Renssselaer Polytechnic Institute. Cloth sunned to brown, some wear and stray stains. Rear free endpaper roughly torn, 60% gone. A Good copy.
