Original blue-green cloth, embossed in a vine pattern, gilt lettered, 156 pp. A didactic novel, published anonymously, meant to point out shortcomings in public education. Burton was a Harvard educated Unitarian minister, mostly "at-large". He spent about 3 years at Brook Farm; he left unexpectedly and without explanation in the spring of 1844 (Lindsay Swift, "Brook Farm...", 1904). Contemporary signature (Theodore Dodd) and bookseller stamp (E.F. Duren's, "Next Door West of the Post Office", Bangor.) Wear at the tips, ends and top edge of the spine. Some central gatherings pulled. Light foxing. A Fair copy.
