Uniformly bound in original green cloth, gilt, decorated in blind, printed brick-red endpapers, ads dated March 31, 1853 in the first, November, 1854 in the second. The first virtually unworn, top edge dusty, some stray stains to the endpapers, a Fine copy; the second with light wear to the spine ends, ink stains to the verso of the free endpaper, slightly cocked, a Very Good copy, with an unusual printed bookplate - an anthropomorphic/geometric figure surrounded by text: "The Last Political Prisoners Unconditionally Released by the United States, December 22, 1923" and "This Music Crept by Me Upon the Waters". There were a number of labor activists released from federal prison on this date (Kohn, "American Political Prisoners", 1994). For the two first editions,
