As a young man he spent 15 years as a businessman and diplomat, associating with many of the most accomplished and powerful people of the time in Europe, Russia, and the Near East. He sent letters from abroad for publication in such journals as the Democratic and the North American Reviews, and published papers on prison and mental health reform. He was struck and paralyzed by a military vehicle as the Civil War began. Wrappers brittle with some chipping to edges, a Very Good copy.
