Dated 37 Queen's Gardens, Bayswater Ln., 4 Novr. 1868. Thanking his correspondent for the gift brought him by "...our friend Dr. Youmans....that it is the work of your own hands....I value it very much more. It is already fixed up in my study, where it will be of daily use; and will serve....to remind me of my American friends." Spencer's "...influence in the latter half of the 19th century was immense....it was the best synthesis of the knowledge of his times." He was associated with many of the prominent individualists and materialists of the day: Mill, Huxley, Tyndall, Lewes, and Mary Ann Evans (H.S.M. Elliot in DNB). E.L. Youmans (1821-1887), a chemist, was "America's leading popularizer of science". He founded Popular Science Monthly in 1872, and was "...an intimate friend of Herbert Spencer" (New York Times obit, January 19, 1887). One sheet, folded to make four pages, two are used.
