Osgood, as corresponding secretary of the New York Historical Society, writes to thank Abbott for the "beautiful gift of four proof prints of Cole's Voyage of Life" and promises that "the copy of our publications voted to you will be sent as soon as bound." From www.librarycompany.com: "Thomas Cole's allegorical landscape series, 'The Voyage of Life', enjoyed tremendous popularity as an exhibition piece during the 1840's and 1850's." Samuel Osgood was Unitarian minister, radical reformer, Transcendentalist, editor of the Western Messenger in the '30's, and literary man.
