Charles Sumner was at this time in private practice, thought that politicians were beneath contempt, and developing radical social views. The Thursday Lecture, a Boston institution since 1633, was at this time "dying of inanition" (Commager, Theodore Parker, p.99). Removed from a bound volume, lacking rear wrapper, else Very Good.
