Along with Bayard Taylor, Richard Henry and Elizabeth Stoddard, Edmund Clarence Stedman, and Thomas Bailey Aldrich, Boker had helped to keep Idealism alive in the materialistic years following the Civil War (Willard Thorp in The Literary History of the United States).
