Sutro, Nevada: Adolph Sutro, publisher, 1879. Folio newspaper, 4pp., complete, four issues of this weekly, delivered every Monday - April 21, 18, May 5, and December 15, 1879. Local and national news, politics, mining, human interest, and of course lots of ads. When the Sutro backed "Daily Independent" of Virginia City folded after just 6 months, he "removed the plant to the town of Sutro in Lyon County" and used it to publish the "The Independent", which ran from July, 1875 to November, 1880, with a brief suspension from March 1 to April 21, 1879, when it returned as a semi-weekly (beginning with the first issue offered here). It returned to weekly status just 10 weeks later (Lingenfelter and Gash, "Newspapers of Nevada", 1984). These four issues are duplicates from the Bancroft Library, University of California. Of the four folio issues (eight total leaves), all are now separated; five are printed on linen, front and back. These were either printed on linen, or perhaps reproduced later from microfilm or a photo-offset process from the original issues. These are browned, some needing later, still old, linen re-inforcement as they grew worn, and sometimes these repairs obscure text. One leaf on paper with linen reinforcement along the margins. Two leaves (December 15, 1879, complete) are original paper, browned, brittle, some deep edge-chipping, a few tears including a six inch tear. This with an old stampe from an illegible "Advertising Agency" in San Francisco. The linen copies sound but Fair, the paper issue poor. Extra postage will be necessary. For the lot,
