Three volumes bound together (No place): all Privately Printed in 1893, each with separate title page and pagination, pp. (1)-116; (1)-(126); (5)-77. Bound in comtemporary vegetable vellum, red leather label, gilt lettered, decorated in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers, on laid paper. The first title with original front printed wrapper bound in, bearing a presentation inscription to Edward Step, dated "New Year's Day 1893" and signed. Alexander Japp (1837-1905), from Scotland, was a poet and editor, writing under his own name and several pseudonyms on diverse subjects such as literary criticism, biography, the laboring class, natural history, animal conciousness, and anthropology. He wrote "The Memoir of Nathaniel Hawthorne" (1872) and a "Study of Thoreau" (1878) under the name H.A. Page. "Japp's interest in Thoreau brought him the acquaintance of Robert Louis Stevenson". He arranged for the publication of "Treasure Island" in "Young Folks". His last book was a biography of Stevenson (Gerald Le Grys Norgate in DNB). Edward Step (1855-1931) wrote many popular books on natural history. A lovely book, the bottom of the rear joint cracked about an inch, else Fine.
