London: B. Fellowes, 1849. First edition. Original green cloth, gilt, decorated in blind, 128 pp. "The title poem derives from an episode in the 'Odyssey' and is strongly influenced by the German poet Heinrich Heine whom Arnold in a later essay was to describe as having 'an extraordinary delicacy of organisation and susceptibility to impressions'" (Murray, "A Life of...", 1997, p.95), but Arnold was actually writing about French poet Maurice de Guerin (in "Essays in Criticism", 1865.).
