Boston: James Munroe, 1836. First edition. Original publisher's cloth, gilt-decorated. Translated from the German by G.W. (George Wallis) Haven. This is Heine's "The Romantic School". From the preface: "Heine wrote this work with reference to the 'Germany' of Madame de Stael, his object being partly to correct or confirm, as the case might be, her opinions, partly to complete her work by giving a sketch of German literature since the appearance of her work". Haven also translated Schiller's "Wallenstein's Camp" (1837) and some of Goethe's poems in "Select Minor Poems....of Goethe and Schiller....by John S. Dwight" (1839). Light foxing. Cloth a little sunned, chipped at spine ends. A Very Good copy.
