Original green cloth, gilt lettered, decorated in gilt and blind, illustrated, 557 pp. Edited, with a memoir, by George William Curtis; with a "Letter to His Friends", by Frederika Bremer. Downing, considered by some to be the father of American landscape architecture. He was editor of "The Horticulturalist" - most of the essays in this volume first appeared there. Curtis met Downing in 1846 through Christopher Pearse Cranch, who was related to Downing by marriage. Downing (born 1815) died when the steamer "Henry Clay" caught fire and sank in July, 1852. Light wear, a Very Good copy.
