No date, but docketed Sept., 1864 on the last page. To a Mr. Kennedy, notifying that a dinner party has been postponed because the guest of honor had not arrived in town as yet. George Bancroft, American historian, is writing about Goldwin Smith, who was professor of history at Oxford. Smith gained the gratitude of many in America when he supported the North in the Civil War, changing the minds of many English, who were upset because of the massive unemployment caused by the failure of raw cotton to reach English mills. At the time of this letter he was on a lecture tour in the northern United States, and was feted wherever he went. One small sheet, folded to make four pages, one is used, docketed on p. 4 by the recipient. Fine.
