Washington, D.C.: (no publisher), 1871. Sixth edition, the first English edition, only printing (Myerson, A2.6). Recent full maroon leather, green leather label, gilt, spine decorated in gilt, new endpapers, retains the original flyleaves and front blank (a-1), leaves not cut down for re-binding - measure 7 5/8 x 4 11/16. A type facsimile of A2.5 by the English pirate John Camden Hotten. "There are different textual readings (and other changes) that distinguish it from the American edition", and Myerson quotes marginalia written by H. Buxton Forman in his copy: "This edition...purporting to be printed in New York, was in reality printed in London - one of the many meaningless swindles of the late John Hotten" (Myerson, p.78, notes 2 and 3). Myerson speculates that Hotten was afraid of English obscenity laws and thought it would be safer to pose as the English distibutor than to be known as the publisher. A Fine copy.
