London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1853. First edition (Colbeck, v.1, p.18). Original green cloth, gilt, decorated in blind, printed yellow endpapers, ads dated March 31, 1853. Edmund Gosse's copy, his book plate on the front pastedown. Gosse was in the next generation of English critics and poets. When Gosse applied for a lectureship at Trinity College, Cambridge, Arnold, Tennyson and Browning wrote references (Michael Stuart Newton, intro. to Gosse's "Father and Son", 2004). With a 1947 ownership signature (R.H. Syfret) and her academic annotations in pencil throughout. Spine sunned, worn at top and bottom, with three small, 1/4 inch holes along spine edges. Boards peeping through at corners. A Good, sound copy.
