Original green cloth, lettered in gilt, decorated in black and gilt, 382 pp. With a lengthy note on the flyleaf by Edward Everett Hale, with his signature and a 1907 date. "Martineau is certainly the first religious philosopher of his time....'Endeavors After a Christian Life' is a collection of his sermons published before this ('Hours of Thought...') was. Take the two together - and keep them at hand - and you have a good practical handbook for 'The Larger Life'". In all, nearly 25 lines on the recto and verso of the flyleaf. Martineau and Hale cooperated in advancing Unitarian and liberal Christian interests. Martineau contributed to "Old and New", successor to "The Christian Examiner", when Hale was its editor early in the 1870's. Light rubbing. Damp-stain along the outer edge of the title. A Very Good copy, gilt bright.
