New York: Brentano's, (1924). First edition, first printing. Original black cloth, gilt-lettered on the spine and the front, color frontis, top edge stained green. It is thought that there were about 300 copies. With and introduction by Carl Van Vechten -- it was he who chose the title "Prancing Nigger". It is a story of racial discrimination -- of an ambitious black family's attempts to break into white society in a fictionalized Caribbean country. The first English edition was published a little later in 1924 under Firbank's original title, "Sorrow in Sunlight" (Benkovitz, 1963 and 1980, A10). Lacking the dust jacket, which was illustrated like the frontis. Spine gilt has disappeared, and a stray white mark on the front, else a Fine copy.
