Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1845. First edition (BAL 1362). Original cream printed wrappers, 36 pp. A gift inscription: "Prof. D.R. Goodwin from C.A.B." on the front. Daniel Raynes Goodwin was professor of modern languages at Bowdoin. He eventually was President of Trinity College, then Provost at the University of Pennsylvania (Allibone, supplememt). The inscription is in the hand of Cyrus Bartol was a Unitarian minister in Boston and a member of the "Transcendental Club". Withdrawn from the Bowdoin College Library, mounted into a paper library binding. Bowdoin ownership embossed on the front wrapper and the title, no other library markings. The original pamphlet lightly foxed with a vertical crease, mounting adhesions. There will be more of the latter when removed from the truly ugly library binding.
