New York: William H. Colyer, 1843. Third edition, second printing (Tarr, A13.3.b). Original printed wrappers. With "Fourth Edition" on the title page. An unauthorized reprint. Emerson wrote Carlyle about a certain "Collyer" of New York who published "a mean edition for twelve and one half cents, and of this wretched copy several thousands were sold, whilst our seventy-five cents edition went off slower". (The Correspondence of Carlyle and Emerson, 1834-1872. London: 1883). Emerson had arranged a cheap edition from the authorized publishers, Little and Brown, and had written to the country's reprint houses in an effort to forestall a piracy like this one. Wrappers a little chipped and beginning to separate at spine. A Very Good copy.
