New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1859. First edition. Original wrappers, lettered in gilt on the front, spine reinforced with later cloth tape, 43 pp., 2 leaves of ads. Winthrop's first book. He wrote it to attract attention for his friend, Frederick E. Church, whose new painting, "The Heart of the Andes", had just been finished and was on exhibit and for sale in New York. The painting eventually sold for $10,000 (Wikipedia). Wrappers chipped at the corners. A scarce item, in Good condition.
