London: Neville Spearman, (1954). First English edition. Original red cloth, white lettering, pictorial dust jacket. Presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: "For George Sims With all best S.J. Perelman" The humorist Perelman was West's best friend, the dedicatee of this volume, and was married to West's sister, Laura. "West dedicated A Cool Million to S.J. Perelman, and he was conciously imitating certain characteristics of the style of his financially successful brother-in-law" (David D. Galloway, "A Picaresque Apprenticeship: Nathanael West's.....A Cool Million" in Nathanael West, edited by Jay Martin, Englewood Cliffs, (1971)). Jay Martin, in his biography of West (1970), called A Cool Million a cross between Horatio Alger's books and Mein Kampf. West was satirizing the American success myth. George Sims was a bookseller, novelist, and publisher. His bookplate on the pastedown. The volume Very Good, the jacket with some edge tears and chips, light foxing on the back, spine a little sunned, front still bright, colorful.
