1 [Twain, Mark] "Short Bits" in "The San Franciscan"

for February 25, 1885. Original folio newspaper, 16 pp., complete. The "Short Bits" columnist, "Francesca", tells a story about Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and Charles Farrar Browne (Artemus Ward) in Virginia City, Nevada. Browne (as humorist Artemus Ward) was there to give a lecture. A little wear, stamp of the Library of the California Academy of Sciences. A Very Good copy.

2 Twain, Mark Samuel Clemens. 1601.

(Warrenville, IL: The Pony Barn Press, 1939). First edition thus. Original black textured cloth, printed in red, title in black and red. Unpaginated, about 28 pp. "Here is a lusty, witty, rowdy, bawdy word picture of the glorious Elizabethans" (from the printer's preface). Edward Martin Moore operated the Pony Barn Press under the "Sign of the Hand" in Edwardsville. A presentation slip, also printed by Moore, pasted to the front pastedown. The giver and receiver in ink, illegible. A Fine copy.

3 [Twain, Mark, Samuel Clemens]. Ghost Life on the Mississippi" in "The Pacific Spectator".

Palo Alto: Stanford University Press. Volumes I - X, 1947-1956. Ten volumes of The Pacific Spectator, all published, a quarterly. Uniform red cloth, gilt. The manuscript of "Ghost Life on the Mississippi" was found in the house of Samuel Clemens' sister, Pamela, in St. Louis, by a descendant. The story appears here for the first time, having been presented by Pamela's grandson. It is thought to have been written in about 1861. "The Pacific Spectator has for its purpose the interpretation and discussion of enduring human values, past and present, which have found expression in literature and the arts. (from the 'Editorial Statement' in the first issue)". Partly edited and with contributions by Wallace Stegner, as well as Bernard DeVoto, Oscar Lewis, George R. Stewart, Waldo Frank, Howard Mumford Jones, Josephine Miles, Muriel Rukeyser, Henry Nash Smith, Jessamyn West, Joseph Wood Krutch, Lewis Mumford, Lawrence Clark Powell, Clark Kerr. This is Raymond D. Williamson's set, his name in gilt on the front of each volume. He was a charter subscriber; a lengthy list of them is bound into v.1. Fine condition, not a hint of wear or soil.
