[Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth] Luigi Monti. Autograph Letter, Signed.
Dated April 21, 1913, to Mrs. Marion Longfellow O'Donoghue, a descendant of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, in Washington, D.C. Monti (1830-1914) talks about the recent visits of several of the Longfellow family and promises to send a current photograph. Luigi Monti, who was born in Palermo, fought in the revolution of 1848-49, was exiled to the United States, where he taught Italian under Longfellow. He is the model for the young Sicilian in Longfellow's "Tales of a Wayside Inn" (1863). One sheet folded to make four pages, all are used, about 300 words. Small portion of the secound leaf lacking, with loss of about ten words. These are supplied by a typescript from a former owner of the letter, Newbegin's Book Shop of San Francisco. Folded for mailing, some folds are re-inforced with tape. With the original mailing envelope. In Fair condition, only.

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. First edition (BAL 12163). Later half leather, gilt, decorated in gilt, and marbled paper boards, all edges gilt. William Winter's copy, his ownership signature on the title, and his presentation inscription to his daughter: "To my Dear Viola (Rosamund Winter). Christmas Day, 1901." Her name is stamped in gilt on the front. Some wear. Front board may have been re-attached, rear joint tender. A Very Good copy.

Boston: Munroe and Francis. Edited by J.T. and E. Buckingham. Original printed wrappers. The first issue of this literary monthly. Included are the first of six parts of Longfellow's "The Schoolmaster", later to become part of "Outre-Mer" (1833), and his translation "From the Spanish of Luis de Gongora" (Carroll A. Wilson, 1950). With contributions by N.L. Frothingham, Edward Everett, George S. Hillard, and more (Frank Luther Mott, 1957). Spine nearly gone, each wrapper nearly detached. Slight (1/4 x 1 1/2 inches) nibbling (mouse?) along the fore-edge of most leaves. A Good copy, only.
