2 Fuller, S. Sarah Margaret. Literature and Art.

New York: Fowlers and Wells, 1852. First edition, third printing (Myerson, A6.1.c), two volumes in one. Original black cloth, gilt lettered, decorated in blind, viii, 164; 183. Parke Godwin's copy, his signature ("Godwin") on the title. Parke Godwin (1816-1904) was a journalist and a reformer; he knew Miss Fuller from Brook Farm. His first book was "Popular View of the Doctrines of Charles Fourier" (1844). He took over the editorship of the Brook Farm journal "The Harbinger" when it moved to New York. Godwin later wrote for William Cullen Bryant's "New York Evening Post"; he had married one of Bryant's daughters. Some of his opinions expressed in that paper were so critical of the complacency of New Yorkers and New Englanders in view of slavery and poverty that he was the cause of periodic declines in circulation. The cloth is clean, though the spine ends are chipped, tips rubbed through. Binder's leaves are clean but the text paper is browned and foxed. A Good, sound copy.
