1 Fields, James T. Anniversary Poem, Delivered Before the Mercantile Library Association of Boston, September 13, 1838.

Boston: William D. Ticknor, 1838. First edition (BAL 5903). Removed from a bound volume, 18 pp. Blanck notes that every copy of this that he saw was bound with an Address of Edward Everett, both within blue printed wrappers. Lacking the final blank, as well as the Everett address and the blue wrappers! Light foxing, a Fine copy.

Dated 148 Charles Street, April 16, 1878. To Rev. A.P. (Alfred Porter) Putnam, Unitarian minister in Brooklyn, looking forward to his scheduled May 7 lecture to the Long Island Historical Society, and offering "The Literary and Artistic Society in London, as I Saw It, Thirty Years Ago" or, "if they prefer it, A brief paper on Nathaniel Hawthorne". One sheet, one page, in Fine condition.

3 Fields, J.T. James Thomas. Autograph Letter, Signed.

Dated March 23, 1872. To Mr. Stone: "If I were the editor of the Atlantic Monthly I wd. print your paper, but as I am not, having left the chair a year ago. I will hand your interesting article to Mr. Howells...". William Dean Howells was editor, but Fields remained the publisher. One page, folded as though for maiiling. Mounting stains on the obverse, bleeding through at one edge. In Very Good condition.

4 Fields, Jas. T. James Thomas. Autograph Letter, Signed.

Dated Thursday, Sept. 28th, no year, but the paper bears an 1840 watermark. September 28 fell on a Thursday in 1843. No greeting, the letter in full: "If Miss Richardson has a letter of Jas. Munroe to spare I shall be very, very glad to get it & will exchange for it some good one of equal value. I want it more than almost another just now." One sheet folded to make 4 pp., one is used. Then, folded as though for mailing. A Fine letter.

5 Fields, James T. Autograph Quotation, Signed.

Dated Gambrel Cottage, Manchester-By-The-Sea, June 1880. Courage! nothing can withstand / Earnest heart and willing hand!" Fields sometimes used these lines when giving an autograph. They are adapted from the poem "Courage" by Barry Cornwall (Bryan Waller Procter), in "English Songs and Other Small Poems", reprinted by Ticknor, Reed, and Fields in 1856. Fields memorialized his friend Procter in "Old Acquaintance. Barry Cornwall and Some of His Friends", 1876. In Fine condition.

Cambridge: Printed by Metcalf and Co., no date but 1854. Original brown cloth, gilt, decorated in blind, all edges gilt. Presentation copy: "F.H. from his friend J.T.F." Engraved bookplate, binder's glue staining the endpapers. Light chipping at spine ends. A Very Good copy.

8 [Fields, James T., his copy; James Hogg] Songs by the Ettrick Shepherd. Now First Collected.

Edinburgh: William Blackwood; London: T.Cadell, 1831. First edition (NCBEL v.3, 269). Nineteenth century half-calf, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt, and marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers; vii, 311 pp. A gift inscription on p(i): "To J.T. Fields by his friend J.B." Fields has signed one of the front binder's leaves, and someone has tipped in an engraved portrait of Hogg opposite the signature. Fields, the noted American publisher (Ticknor and Fields), has marked several poems and made some annotations, including notes about printing them. He did print them, in "The Family Library of British Poetry From Chaucer to the Present", Houghton, Osgood, 1878. Fields had retired from publishing in 1871; Houghton, Osgood was a successor to his firm. With the engraved bookplate of Boylston Adams Beal, Fields' wife's nephew. All edges with some rubbing. In Very Good condition.

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1875. Stated 11th edition, but first edition, later printing. Later green cloth, gilt lettered and ruled, foral endpapers, title in red and black, 352 pp. Perhaps early 20th century re-bind. The slightest rubbing, top edge dust-soiled. Paper lightly toned, else Fine.
