Boston: The Beacon Press, 1934. First edition (Myerson, A57). Original printed paper boards, printed dust jacket. Emerson's 1842 response to a letter from Solomon Corner regarding the nature of the universe and self-reliance. A Fine copy in a Very Good jacket, a few small edge chips.

2 [Emerson, Ralph Waldo] Thayer, James Bradley. A Western Journey With Mr. Emerson.

Boston: Little, Brown, 1884. First edition. Original white printed wrappers, green printed dust jacket, 141 pp. Thayer was related to Emerson by marriage. First gathering almost loose. Endpapers cracked. Jacket chipped with 10% lost, the remainder pasted to a recent, matching sheet. A Fair copy.

No imprint. Bust portrait, Emerson is about 60, looking to his left. Card edges scalloped. Card browned, image lacks optimum contrast, obverse of card with paper adhesions from mounting. A Good example.

Imprint of Allen, 24 Temple Place, Boston. After a Samuel Rowse crayon drawing, a bust portrait, Emerson is about 55, looking to his left. Edward L. Allen was at 24 Temple Street from 1869-1873 (Steele and Polito, 1993). In Fine condition, save a contemporary date in ink (1870) and a later ink identification on the back of the card.

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, 1903. First edition (Myerson, A49.1.a). Original printed wrapper folded over plain card stock wrapper, in printed dust jacket, top edge gilt, others uncut, 90 pp. In a custom plain slipcase. Edited by Frederick William Holls, and he inscribes and signs, dated May 28, 1903. He would die two months later of a heart attack at the age of 46. A Fine copy in a toned, soiled, edge worn, very good jacket.

Boston: Phillips, Sampson, 1856. First edition, second printing (Myerson, A24.1.b). Original black cloth, blind-stamped and gilt-lettered. The 1st printing was 3100 copies, this was 2000. That ugly flaw in the plates at the bottom of page 230 has been fixed here, and there were some corrections to the text. Slightly cocked, some rubbing, some fraying to spine ends. A Very Good copy.

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, 1921. First edition. Original cloth, gilt, printed dust jacket. Stebbins succeeded Thomas Starr King as pastor of the First Unitarian Church of San Francisco in 1864. In that capacity he entertained Emerson as a lecturer during the California trip of 1871 (pp. 65-66). Emerson was paid for his lectures "in twenty dollar gold pieces, the first he had ever seen". Not in Burkholder and Myerson (1985). Fine in a fine jacket.

17 [Emerson, Ralph Waldo] Anonymous. Hymns, Selected From the Most Approved Authors for the Use of the Trinity Church, Boston.

Boston: Munroe, Francis, and Parker, 1808. Original full calf, gilt-lettered and ruled, 179 pp. with the ownership inscription of Hannah Kast Haskins. April 8, 1810, and in another hand "Presented by Her Honoured Grand Papa John Haskins, Seniour" (1829-1814). Hannah was the daughter of John Haskins, Junior (1762-1840); she and her cousin Ralph Waldo Emerson shared this grand papa, a prominent cooper and distiller in Boston. Hannah has made an elaborate doodle of her name at the top of the first hymn. Both boards detached but present; spine ends chipped and gilt almost entirely eroded. Paper browned with staining to the binder's leaves; the front free endpaper, bearing the inscription, is loose. A Poor copy, but distinguished by scarcity and provenance.

Gift inscription from Emerson's son, Edward Waldo Emerson: "To Mrs. Ernest Haskell. 'Chance (illegible word) the cornerstone of our lives.' From E.W.E." Ernest Haskell was an artist and print maker. A Fine copy.

These are Phillips and Sampson sheets with the Ticknor and Fields title cancellans, the half-title pasted down. Very little wear but a bit shaken. Light foxing, a Very Good copy.
