2 [Thoreau, Henry D.] Lowell, James Russell. A Fable for Critics.

(New York): G.P. Putnam, (1848). First edition, second printing (BAL 13063). Original paper boards, printed paper label lacking, in a custom marbled paper slipcase. Lowell's popular poem pokes fun at many of the literary figures of the day, including Thoreau, who had yet to write his first book: "How he jumps, how he strains, and gets red in the face, / To keep step with the mystagogue's (Emerson) natural pace!". Worn, top of spine lacks 1 1/2 inches, label lacking, light foxing. A Good copy.

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1881. Second edition, probably the 5th printing, somewhere close to 150 copies (see Borst, p.9). Original green cloth, gilt lettered, bevelled edges, 415 pp. Ownership label and signature of James Knapp Reeve, dated 1881. Reeve was a novelist ("Vawder's Understudy - A Study in Platonic Affection", 1896; "The Three Richard Whalens", 1897) from Franklin, Ohio. Lightly rubbed at the edges, clean with gilt bright. A Very Good copy.

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1884. First edition (Borst, A9.1.a.1, American issue; BAL 20127). Original green cloth, gilt, bevelled edges, black endpapers, 382 pp., 16 pages of undated ads inserted at the back, folding map on Concord on tissue inserted before the title. George Partridge Bradford's copy, signed twice (Geo. P. Bradford, Concord Mass.). Another early signature under the first Bradford one - "Rebecca Ames". Bradford (1807-1890) "was a confidant of Emerson; he brought Emerson and Bronson Alcott together; he was a friend of Hawthorne; he was an outdoor companion of Thoreau, who acknowledged him as an expert naturalist; and he was a business partner of famed horticulturist Marston Watson of Plymouth" (James M. Mathews, "George Partridge Bradford: Friend of Transcendentalists" in "Studies in the American Renaissance", 1981, pages 133-156, ed. Joel Myerson). With the presentation bookplate of Carnegie-Mellon University's Hunt Library, "In Memory of Donald M. Goodfellow", and a small library stamp on the rear flyleaf. Moderate rubbing to spine ends, light to edges; front endpapers beginning to crack. A Very Good copy.
