1 Ellis, Charles Mayo. An Essay on Transcendentalism.

Boston: Crocker and Ruggles, 1842. First edition. Recent cloth, paper spine label, gilt-lettered, 104 pp. A presentation copy: "C.M. Ellis to his sisters, July 22, 1842". A Boston lawyer and abolitionist, Ellis (1811-1878)helped defend Anthony Burns. He was an admirer of Ralph Waldo Emerson and issued this essay in his support (Von Frank, The Trials of Anthony Burns, 1998). He encouraged Theodore Parker to bring all his controversial ideas together in one statement, the "Discourse on Matters Pertaining to Religion" of 1842 (Perry, The Transcendentalists, 1950). His father, Charles Ellis, sold to George Ripley and his associates the Roxbury land that became Brook Farm. The cloth unworn, the label chipped along one edge. Moderate staining to the paper. A Very Good copy.
