1 [Lowell, James Russell] Cary, Henry Francis, translator. The Vision: Or, Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise of Dante Alighieri.

New York: D. Appleton, 1845. Original brown cloth, gilt, elaborately decorated in gilt and blind. An interesting association copy: inscribed from Dante scholar James Russell Lowell and his wife, Maria, in Lowell's hand, to their nephew, Charles Russell Lowell, on the future Civil War hero's 12th birthday. Charles and his uncle James, who was just 16 years older, were very close. As Charles grew older, James "....treated him more like a friend than a nephew....(and) they began to have friends in common." (Bundy, The Nature of Sacrifice: A Biography of Charles Russell Lowell, 2005). When Charles died leading a charge at Cedar Creek in October, 1864, his uncle James noted that he had been the pride of the family, "...by far the best thing we had." (quoted in Duberman, 1966). The first Appleton edition, first printing, and an important one - it would be reprinted "more than a dozen times" before 1880 (Kathleen Verduin, "Dante in America...", in "Reading Books..", 1996, Moylan and Stiles, eds.), from the newly revised Henry F. Cary translation. Edgar Allan Poe called it "...exquisitely printed on very fine paper, embellished with a dozen carefully engraved plates from Flaxman's inimitable designs, tastefully and durably bound...Messrs. Appleton in giving us this edition, have rendered a very important service to the literature of the country." (quoted in Moylan and Stiles, p.23). Dante came late to the English speaking world - the first appearance in English was just three cantos in 1782. Cary's first edition came out in 1805. Somewhat worn, both spine ends chipped, the top especially so. Paper a little browned. A Good, sound copy, with a wonderful association.
