Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, 1896. First edition. Original green cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, title in red and black, top edge gilt, others uncut, (i-viii); (1)-268 pp., inserted frontis. The half-title gives this as Volume X of the Riverside Edition of the Writings of John Burroughs, and states a limitation of 1,000 sets printed. Inscribed and signed by the author: "Serenely I fold my hands and wait John Burroughs Aug 19, 1901". The recipient has noted that "Mr. Burroughs gave me this book in January 1897. This is very nearly as tall as the paper. At 7 3/8 inches this is taller than BAL's 2162, which measured 6 9/16 and wore a two-toned green binding. This with a magazine illustration of "Slabsides" pasted to the front endpaper, and a newspaper clipping of Whitman's "Captain! My Captain! pasted to the front flyleaf, its acidic paper leaving a ghost on the facing binder's leaf. Light wear and dust soiling, spine sunned, a 1/2 inch splash mark on the front. A Good, sound copy.
