2 Brooks, Charles T. Timothy. Autograph Letter, Signed.

To "My dear Mrs. (Anne) Botta", dated Newport, April 15, 1868, thanking her for the gift of a portrait, and sending (no longer present) a photograph of himself, though "I fear I am a poor subject for solar portraiture." Anne Charlotte Lynch Botta wrote for the journals and published poetry. She kept a literary salon in New York, a gathering place where writers could relax and compare notes, "...the first important salon in the history of American letters." (DAB). She entertained such writers as Poe, Bryant, Margaret Fuller, Emerson, Trollope, Thackeray, and Matthew Arnold. "She did not lionize her celebrated visitors or use them as rungs on the social ladder. Her receptions were known for their pleasant atmosphere, free from petty gossip and back-biting." (Edward T. James, ed., "Notable American Women", 1971). Four pages on one sheet folded. A Fine letter.
