1 Brewer, Thomas Mayo. Autograph Letter, signed.

One page, February 24th, 1873, on "Brewer and Tileston, Educational Publishers" letterhead. To "My dear Laurence" (or Lawrence). Regarding the receipt of a specimen of "least hummingbird" from a "P. Bland", and wondering if Lawrence has made any progress "in the hummingbirds". Brewer's coorespondent may be George Newbold Lawrence (1806-95, "Lawrence's Goldfinch"). Brewer wrote "North American Oology" (1857) and collaborated with Baird and Ridgway in "The History of North American Birds" (1875). He was a rival of Elliot Coues over the desirability of the house sparrow in North America, Coues wished to introduce control measures (Evans, "Pioneer Naturalists", 1993). Folded for mailing and a light crease. A Very Good letter.
