2 Froude, James Anthony. Calvinism: An Address Delivered at St. Andrews, March 17, 1871.

New York: Charles Scribner, 1871. First American edition. Original orange cloth, gilt-lettered on the front, decorated in blind, 47 pp. Froude had a knack for enraging Catholic and Church of England theologians - this essay is a good example. "The author (of Calvinism, Froude) says, in plain terms, that it is not more criminal in a Calvinist to burn a witch than for any other person to invite a spirit-rapper to dinner" (J.G. Meline, in "Catholic World", v.13, 1871), and "I know nothing to be compared to Mr. Froude's ecclesiastical bitterness" (Thomas Mozley, "Reminiscences, Chiefly of....the Oxford Movement", 1882, v.2). Some wear and stray marks, lots of ticks and underlinings by a former owner. A Good, sound copy.

Subjects include arranging a meeting (2); discussing the publisher Longmans, and what kind of arrangements a writer can expect to make with a publisher; and to Botta, discussing “the Berean people who want to be in constant communication with me…..I am like a bear tied to a stake…..and I tied myself to it!”. 11 Froude, James Anthony. Zeta. Shadows of the Clouds.

London: John Ollivier, 1847. First edition (Wolff, 2366). Original green cloth, gilt, decorated in blind, 287 pp. Written under the pseudnym "Zeta" ontaining two stories, that of a prep school boy who is treated poorly by his masters and school mates and becomes a sneak and a cheat, and "the equally disagreeable story of seduction" of a young girl and the consequences for her. "The greater part of the edition is said to have been bought up and destroyed by Froude's father." (Alfred Frederick Pollard in DNB). This copy with the publisher's name in gilt at the base of the spine; Wolff's copy had "Harrison, Pall Mall" there. Not in Sadleir; both Wolff and Colbeck mis-spell the publisher's name. Ex-library, with no external markings but a few stampings on the binder's leaves. Slightly cocked. Top of spine with two little snags. A Very Good copy.
