Dated December 7, (no year).. To "My dear Mr. Botta", regretting that he cannot visit, but "I have undertaken a piece of literary work which will require me to be much by myself.....Also the Berean people want to be in constant communication with me -- and that will be impossible if I am too far off.....I am like a bear tied to a stake from which he is vainly struggling to free himself. And I tied myself to it!" This would be the Italian philosophy professor Vincenzo Botta, husband of Anne Charlotte Lynch Botta, American writer and keeper of an influential literary salon. One sheet, folded to make four pages, three are used, about 150 words. Folded for mailing, two mounting adhesions on the last (blank) page. A Very Good letter.

Dated Holm Park, Ashburton, June 26, (no year). To "My dear Sir," discussing the publisher, Longmans, and the customary financial arrangement between an author and his publisher. This was likely written after 1881, as Froude comments that he and his correspondent were virtual neighbors in this part of England (Devon) that Thomas Carlyle liked very well. Mourning paper, one sheet folded to make four pp., three are used. Folded for mailing, A Very Good letter.

To an unknown correspondent, fearing there has been a misunderstanding: "....as I have not heard from you to mention the day you will come.....pray write at once." He gives directions. Froude, James Anthony. Calvinism: An Address Delivered at St. Andrews, March 17, 1871.
New York: Charles Scribner, 1871. First American edition. Original orange cloth, gilt-lettered on the front, decorated in blind, 47 pp. Froude had a knack for enraging Catholic and Church of England theologians - this essay is a good example. "The author (of Calvinism, Froude) says, in plain terms, that it is not more criminal in a Calvinist to burn a witch than for any other person to invite a spirit-rapper to dinner" (J.G. Meline, in "Catholic World", v.13, 1871), and "I know nothing to be compared to Mr. Froude's ecclesiastical bitterness" (Thomas Mozley, "Reminiscences, Chiefly of....the Oxford Movement", 1882, v.2). Some wear and stray marks, lots of ticks and underlinings by a former owner. A Good, sound copy.

Imprint of (Napoleon) Sarony, New York. Two poses from the same sitting in about 1875. Froude was an historian and literary figure; he wrote a biography of his great friend Thomas Carlyle. It was he who created a great scandal with the speculation that Carlyle had never consummated his marriage. Bothe cartes are from a photographic archive, the "Culver Service" of New York, which rented pictures for publication. The images are Fine, the back of the cards bear paper adhesions and lettering related to the archive.
